Hanukkah lamp. Breslau, Germany (today Wrocław, Poland), 1864.
Silver, cut, repoussé, and engraved. Marked with the city mark of Breslau and the number 64 (indicating the year 1864; typus xx), and with the maker’s mark: MHS within a rectangular frame (the letters MH conjoined).
The backplate of the lamp is decorated with vegetal and geometric patterns, topped with a shell-shaped ornament. At center, a pierced arch-shaped opening contains a silver plaque engraved with the Hanerot Halalu blessing, traditionally recited or chanted after kindling the lights.
Eight elongated oil fonts with cylindrical spouts and hook-shaped handles are fitted into designated slots above a rectangular drip tray. Two removable servant lights included.
This lamp is similar in its design to a group of Hanukkah lamps produced in Nuremberg during the 18th century, particularly those created by the silversmith Matheus Städlein in the first half of the 18th century. In those earlier examples, the Hanukkah blessings were typically incorporated into the backplate on parchment or paper; in contrast, the later example offered here features a silver plaque engraved with the blessing's text.
For comparison, see: The Jewish Museum New York collection (F197, Braunstein no. 13); Sotheby’s, Tel Aviv, October 1991, Lot 271; and Sotheby’s, New York, 15 December 2022, Lot 130.
Height: 27.5 cm. Max. width: 29 cm. Max. depth: 9 cm. Overall good condition. Minor bends and blemishes. Backplate slightly bowed forward.

Hanukkah Lamp. [Probably Morocco, possibly Fez, 19th century].
Brass sheet, pierced, punched, and engraved.
Large Hanukkah lamp, exhibiting design influences of Hanukkah lamps of Dutch origin but probably made in Morocco. Back plate in the form of an undulating arch, with pierced decorative elements. The punched and engraved decorative elements appearing on the brass sheet serve to highlight the contours of the lamp’s unique decorative motifs, namely a large tree with tulip-like flowers, and, on either side of its trunk, a pair of mermaids (or sirens), each holding up a carving knife. The side panels bear patterns matching those on the back plate. The removable row of large oil fonts, with pinched, pointed spouts for the wicks, is suspended above the drip pan and kept in place by five tabs inserted into five dedicated slots – in the back plate, and in each of the two side panels. The servant light is positioned in the center of the back plate.
For comparison, see: Mordechai Narkiss, The Hanukkah Lamp, Item No. 123 and p. 55 (note that Narkiss attributes this lamp to: "Holland, 18th century"); and Chaya Benjamin, North African Lights: Hanukkah Lamps from the Zeyde Schulmann Collection in the Israel Museum (English edition), No. 25.
Height: 39 cm. Width: 32.5 cm. Depth: 10 cm. Overall good condition. Minor blemishes and warping.

Hanukkah lamp. Tétouan (Tetuan), northern Morocco, [early 20th century].
Cast brass; brass sheet, cut, pierced, punched, and engraved; copper rivets.

The surface areas of the back plate and side panels are entirely covered in matching vegetal patterns, and are pierced with openings in a variety of patterns.
The side panels are attached with hinges, enabling them to be opened and closed. The row of cast oil fonts is suspended above the drip pan. Servant light attached to center of back plate, near top. Large suspension ring, attached with hanger fastened just below upper edge of back plate, with rivet.
Height: 29 cm. Width: 23 cm. Depth: 8 cm. Overall good condition. Several loose attachments and loose hinges. Minor warping and fractures. Minor soldering repairs. Pins connecting row of oil fonts and servant light to back plate missing.
