Opening: $500
Sold for: $1,750

Hanukkah Lamp. [Probably Morocco, possibly Fez, 19th century].
Brass sheet, pierced, punched, and engraved.
Large Hanukkah lamp, exhibiting design influences of Hanukkah lamps of Dutch origin but probably made in Morocco. Back plate in the form of an undulating arch, with pierced decorative elements. The punched and engraved decorative elements appearing on the brass sheet serve to highlight the contours of the lamp’s unique decorative motifs, namely a large tree with tulip-like flowers, and, on either side of its trunk, a pair of mermaids (or sirens), each holding up a carving knife. The side panels bear patterns matching those on the back plate. The removable row of large oil fonts, with pinched, pointed spouts for the wicks, is suspended above the drip pan and kept in place by five tabs inserted into five dedicated slots – in the back plate, and in each of the two side panels. The servant light is positioned in the center of the back plate.

For comparison, see: Mordechai Narkiss, The Hanukkah Lamp, Item No. 123 and p. 55 (note that Narkiss attributes this lamp to: "Holland, 18th century"); and Chaya Benjamin, North African Lights: Hanukkah Lamps from the Zeyde Schulmann Collection in the Israel Museum (English edition), No. 25.

Height: 39 cm. Width: 32.5 cm. Depth: 10 cm. Overall good condition. Minor blemishes and warping.
