Memorial plaque originally hung on the wall of the Tomb of Maimonides, Tiberias. Created in Ghardaia, Algeria, 5693 [1933].
Brass, cut and engraved, inlaid with copper and silver (damascening); faded marks on reverse.
Large memorial plaque, shaped like a domed architectonic structure. Semicircular (Hebrew) inscription underneath "dome": "In eternal memory shall be the Righteous One". On the main, central part of the plaque is a detailed (Hebrew) inscription in memory of the emissary David Ben Ivgi (Ibghi) who passed away in Géryville (today El Bayadh), Algeria: "This is the message for the ascent of the soul of ... Rabbi / David Ben Ivgi ... from the venerated city of Géryville ... on this day / the 19th of Tevet 5693 [1933] … may his soul be bound in the bond of life: / as he ordered us prior to his death, to hang it on the tomb of our master, our teacher and rabbi, the Rambam [Maimonides] / ... (made in the venerated city of Géryville ...)".
The border decorations include a vegetal pattern, arabesques, a pair of birds, a fruit-shaped ornament, and a Star of David; some of these decorations are created by copper and silver inlay. Most of the letters are darkened, but in some cases, the gold-like quality of the brass is discernible.
Height: 50 cm. Width: 33.5 cm. Overall good condition. Some decorations created by metal inlay are missing. Warping to bottom right corner. Small suspension holes.
