Thick handwritten record ledger (répertoire), containing brief entries on hundreds of contracts and business dealings registered by notary in Alsace, constituting a rare attestation of the presence of many Jewish families in the region's towns and cities in the late 18th century. [Alsace, 1793-1797]. French.
The ledger is arranged in chronological order, including a brief registration of all contracts registered by notary and deposited with him. The documentation covers a period of over four years (July 1, 1793 to September 3, 1797), and contains details such as date, type of contract, names of parties and their places of living, and notarial fees and payments.
The ledger documents business dealings of thousands of residents of Alsace, especially the towns and cities of the Haut-Rhin region and around Colmar.
This ledger serves as a primary source on the presence, places of residence and economic network of the Jews of Alsace during the French Revolution period and at the beginning of the emancipation of the Jews of France. The inscriptions include hundreds of Jewish families, including: Levi, Bloch, Lehman, Herz, Ullman, Kahn, Blum, Weil, Dreyfus, Salomon, Schwab, Lang, Seligman, Wormser and many others.
On the margins of the last page is a signed inscription by a government official confirming that the ledger and contracts were examined and registered correctly.
On the front binding is a handwritten sticker labeled: "Répertoire Commencé le 1er Juillet 1793 et Fini le 17 Fructidor an 5" [July 1, 1793 to Fructidor 17, year 5, on the French Revolution calendar; corresponds to September 3, 1797].
Enclosed are several leaves in modern French handwriting, with a list of Jews mentioned in the ledger, based on their place of residence and the number of business dealings and contracts registered with the notary.
203 leaves. 33 cm. Good condition. Stains, creases and wear. Marginal open tears to some leaves. Original cardboard binding, with spine and leather corners. Defects and wear to binding and spine.

Portrait of R. Yaakov Yehudah Leon Templo, holding a scroll.

The portrait is encircled by a Latin inscription: "Effigies uiri doctissimi et clarissimi Jacobi Yehudæ Leonis Hebræi autoris Structuræ templi Salomonici facti anno 1641". Signed in print.
The present engraving was made after a portrait of R. Templo created by R. Salom Italia some 20 years prior, in the 1740s.

Born in Portugal to a family of Spanish exiles, he studied in Amsterdam under the rabbi of the Neveh Shalom community, R. Yitzchak Uziel. He was renowned for his books on the prominent Biblical structures and utensils – the Tabernacle, Solomon's temple, and the Ark of the Covenant, which R. Leon described for the first time based on contemporary scientific knowledge.
His pioneering work earned him renown throughout Europe, and drew the attention of contemporary rulers – King Charles II, William II Prince of Orange, and Augustus Duke of Brunswick (who commissioned German translations of the works). Following the success of his books, R. Yehudah Leon created a model of Solomon's temple with small scale utensils, earning him the nickname of "Templo".
