Dead Sea Stone Hanging Plate – Relief of Dome of the Rock – Eretz Israel, Late 19th Century

Large round plate for hanging on wall, depicting the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount. [Eretz Israel, late 19th or early 20th century].
Bitumen (Dead Sea stone), chiseled, turned and engraved.
Heavy round plate for hanging on wall, with concave brim. The center of the plate features a relief of the Dome of the Rock, with captions in Hebrew and French: "The place of the Temple, Jerusalem" / "Mosquée d'Omar". A wide frame decorated with vines with bunches of grapes and leaves, between which are five birds. The plate's entire background is full of subtly-patterned grooves. The brim is raised and rounded. The top edges feature two holes for hanging, on both sides of a metal thread.

Diameter: 38 cm; height: 3.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains, rubbing and defects. Discoloration visible on right side of brim, possibly indicating fractures that underwent professional restoration.
