1. Destruccio Iherosolime – Double incunabula leaf (leaf LXIIII). [Nuremberg: Anton Koberger, 1493]. Latin edition.
Woodcut depicting the destruction of Jerusalem and the First Temple by Nebuzaradan, commander of Nebuchadnezzar’s army, in 586 BCE. Among the earliest printed depictions of Jerusalem (according to Laor 1125, this is the second printed view of the city).
Verso features additional woodcuts: Zedekiah, bound and blinded, led into Babylonian captivity, and portraits of the kings and prophets of the Kingdom of Judah.
Double leaf: approx. 44.5X61.6 cm. Good condition. Stains, some markings and scribbles, small holes along the central fold.

2. Hierosolima – Incunabula leaf (leaf XVII). [Nuremberg: Anton Koberger, 1493]. Latin edition.
Imaginary view of Jerusalem, with the Temple of Solomon prominently depicted at center. Woodcut by Michael Wohlgemut. Verso features the Tower of Babel and portraits of the kings of Assyria and Babylon. Both sides of the leaf hand-colored.

The collection includes a wide range of prints from different periods, in various techniques – lithographs and engravings, some hand-colored, some printed in color, together with several chromolithographs and photogravures – depicting Jerusalem from many angles. Some panoramas are accompanied by detailed legends; some bear full imprint details. Many are folding.

Over 45 prints, some in multiple copies. Size varies: approx. 20X15 cm to 85X60 cm. Overall good to good-fair condition. Stains, wear, defects and minor tears to some prints.

"Ansichten von Jerusalem von Öhl-Berge auf. " Panoramic photograph of Jerusalem, by the Slovenian photographer Christian Paier. Cairo, [ca. 1860s].
Wide-angle panoramic photograph, mounted onto a cardboard plate folded into four quarters. On the plate, in German, is a detailed legend identifying prominent sites throughout the city, which have been assigned corresponding numbers (handwritten) on the photo itself.
This photograph was taken by Christian Paier (also spelled
Kristjan Pajer; 1839-1895), Slovenian photographer, a photojourneying pioneer and one of Jerusalem’s earliest photographers; visited the Holy Land in the years 1860-64. Upon his return to Europe, he presented Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph with a full album of photos of the Holy Land; at the time, this represented a most unique gift. In recognition, the emperor rewarded him with a diamond-studded gold ring. Apparently only a few dozen of Paier’s works have survived, to be found in various museums and archival collections.

A large, early panoramic photograph of Jerusalem taken from the Mount of Olives. Composed of four photographic prints joined together; signed in the negative and numbered 100.
Wilhelm Hammerschmidt (ca. 1830-1869), German photographer, born in Berlin, who was among the first photographers to document the Near East. In 1860, he settled in Cairo and undertook several photographic journeys throughout Egypt and neighboring regions. He is best known for his panoramic views of Eastern cities and antiquities, which rank among the finest achievements of early Near Eastern photography. A selection of his works was exhibited at the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris.

Approx. 106.5X21 cm (overall size; sheet size: 114X29.5 cm). Good condition. Light creasing and minor blemishes to margins. Some staining (mainly on sheets). The four panels are joined with archival, acid-free tape on verso.

Thirty-six photographs by Francis Frith, depicting views of Sinai and Palestine. Each photograph accompanied by a printed descriptive leaf. An additional small photograph appears on the title page.
Francis Frith (1822-1898), English photographer and traveler, among the most prominent of the Holy Land's earliest photographers. Embarked on a journey to Alexandria in 1856, and then spent four years conducting photographic expeditions throughout the Near East. Owing to local conditions, Frith was forced to transport his photographic equipment from place to place on the backs of donkeys, and develop his negatives immediately after taking the photos in makeshift tents that served as his darkrooms. His works are widely regarded as the first professional photographs documenting the Holy Land.
