Lengthy letter (3 large pages) handwritten and signed by R. Tzvi Hirsch Kalischer. Thorn (Toruń, Poland), [1825].
Letter sent by mail to Posen, addressed to his teacher R. Akiva Eiger, Rabbi of Posen. At beginning of letter, R. Tzvi Hirsch begins with a line in his praise.
The letter discusses the betrothal of a girl without her family's permission, performed in an ostensibly valid manner. The father appealed to a court who ruled that the betrothal was invalid, rendering her unmarried with no need for a document of divorce. R. Tzvi Hirsch discusses the betrothal at length, and debates whether to permit the betrothed girl to remarry without a Get.
At the end of the letter, R. Tzvi Hirsch Kalischer offers his teacher wishes for a complete recovery, and apologizes for disturbing him, concluding with his signature and asking for the response to be delivered to him by priority mail in person.
In the margins of the letter, his father R. Shlomo Kalischer adds a short greeting and reiterates the request for an urgent response, with his signature.
On fourth page: Address in German addressed to Posen, and postmark from Thorn, with remains of wax seal.
R. Tzvi Hirsch Kalischer (1795-1874) was a leading Torah scholar of his generation, a close disciple of R. Akiva Eiger and disciple of R. Yaakov of Lissa (Leszno), the Netivot HaMishpat, and his uncle R. Yehudah Leib Kalischer, head of the Lissa Beit Din. After his marriage, he resided in Thorn (Toruń), where he served for many years as rabbi for no compensation. He was an early supporter of the Jewish Yishuv and purchase of land in Eretz Israel, and is considered one of the spiritual fathers of the Zionist movement, and many streets in Israel are named for him.
His father,
R. Shlomo Kalischer of Lissa (ca. 1768-1840) was a friend and relative of R. Akiva Eiger. He resided in Thorn in his final years, as early as 1825, as can be gleaned from the present letter.

Lengthy letter (2 pages) handwritten and signed by R. Alexander Moshe Lapidot, Rabbi of Grodno. "Grodno in Achorei Nahar" (Vorstadt), Av 1863.
Torah letter addressed to R. Yehoshua Heshel HaLevi Levin of Volozhin, author of Aliyot Eliyahu. At the beginning of the letter, R. Alexander Moshe encourages R. Yehoshua to continue the publication of the Peleitat Sofrim periodical (a Torah periodical R. Yehoshua had initiated in 1847, but managed to publish the first issue only in 1863, and for various reasons it was also the last issue). R. Alexander Moshe expresses surprise at the delay in publication, and encourages him to continue to publish, praising his efforts.
R. Alexander Moshe writes Torah novellae (apparently to be printed in the next issue), commenting on an idea of the Gaon of Kutno.
He goes on to comment on an idea of R. Shmuel Salant published in HaLevanon regarding the laws of eating matzah (this discussion was printed during R. Alexander Moshe's lifetime in Kevod HaLevanon, in a correspondence with R. Shmuel Salant). After his signature, R. Alexander Moshe comments further on the HaTevunah periodical of R. Yisrael Salanter, regarding testimony by document.
R. Alexander Moshe Lapidot (1819-1906), an outstanding Torah scholar in his times and one of the leaders of Orthodox Jewry in Lithuania, R. Yisrael Salanter's right-hand man and a founder of the Musar movement. Disciple of R. Hirsh Broide in the Salant yeshiva and R. Avraham Abele Poswoler Rabbi of Vilna. At the age of 17, he was appointed Rabbi of Jonava; later served as Rabbi of the Vorstadt suburb of Grodno; and in 1866, became Rabbi of Raseiniai, a position he held for 40 years until his death. An exceptional Torah genius and one of the greatest authors of responsa in his time, he joined current leaders in dealing with the problems confronting Russian Jewry and the continuous struggle to maintain the Jewish way of life. He was one of those who attempted to arbitrate the dispute in the Volozhin yeshiva. In his youth, he became close to R. Yisrael Salanter, who exerted a large influence on him and gained him as one of his great supporters. He defended the Musar movement from opposition and was a significant contributor to its spread in the Lithuanian yeshivas. He was a close assistant in R. Yisrael Salanter's great endeavors; and became one of the founders of the Perushim kollel in Kovno. He joined R. Yisrael Salanter, the Chafetz Chaim and R. Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor, in publishing Etz Pri (Vilna, 1881) as part of his efforts to improve attitudes towards those who study Torah.
The present letter is a remnant of the Torah teachings of one of the greatest poskim of his times. Most of the present letter has been printed (apparently from the present manuscript) in Sefer HaZikaron LeMaran Baal HaPachad Yitzchak (Jerusalem, 1984, pp. 623-625, sections 3-4) and Torat Rabbeinu Alexander Moshe Lapidot (Lakewood, 2006).

Torat Chacham, sermons on the Torah portions by the kabbalist R. Chaim HaKohen of Aleppo, disciples of R. Hayyim Vital. Venice: Vendramin, [1654]. First edition.
At beginning of book, two poems by R. Moshe Zacuto.
Ownership inscriptions and signatures on title page, second leaf, and pp. 1a and 221a.
The kabbalist R. Chaim HaKohen of Aleppo (1585?-1655) was a close disciple of R. Chaim Vital in the latter's final years in Damascus. After his teacher's passing, R. Chaim served as one of the rabbis of Aleppo. For twenty years, he toiled on composing many works. Upon completing them, he took all his compositions and travelled by ship to Venice, Italy to have them published, yet during the course of the voyage, his ship was attacked by pirates, and R. Chaim escaped the ship together with his son, leaving all his works behind.
When R. Chaim reached Venice, he began reconstructing some of the lost works from memory (this story is recounted in the author's introduction, which is absent from the present copy). In his final years, he printed some of his works, including Tur Bareket, Mekor Chaim and Torat Chacham. In his works, R. Chaim explains the laws of the four parts of Shulchan Aruch based on the methods of kabbalah, homiletics, ethics and inspiration to service of G-d (in a somewhat similar style to Likutei Halachot by R. Natan of Breslov). Many of his works remain unpublished.
In his final year, he settled in Livorno to oversee the printing of his books. There he made the acquaintance of the kabbalist R. Natan Nata Hannover, author of the famous kabbalistic siddur Shaarei Tzion. In his preface to his siddur, R. Natan Nata writes: "And a holy man, R. Chaim, close disciple of R. Chaim Vital came here, and I received from him this splendid wisdom firsthand, and he transmitted to me several good ideas which he had received from his teacher which are not mentioned in Etz Chaim, and all his teachings are as if written from Sinai".
