Spicebox. [Eastern Europe, probably Galicia, 18th century].
Silver (unmarked); filigree; granulation.
Product of high-quality filigree work, in form of a multi-tiered architectonic tower with bell chamber on top, surmounted by a tall steeple, flagpole, and a flag. Rising above each of the four top corners of the bell chamber are four flagpoles with flags.
The spicebox has an arched door rotating on a hinge (probably more recent), which is surmounted by four flagpoles supporting spherical ornaments and two flags, out of an original four.
The base of the bottom tier is encompassed by a balcony with ornamental architectonic columns at its four corners. The spicebox is supported on a more recently created shaft, with a square base adorned with vegetal patterns. Remnants of the original filigreed shaft are soldered onto the existing shaft.

Height: 39 cm. Width of base: 5.5 cm. Fair-poor condition. Numerous fractures, missing pieces, and blemishes, and significant warping. Upper steeple detached. Missing flags and ornaments. Most of the original shaft missing, and in its place is a solid (unfiligreed) silver base, probably from the 19th century. Soldering repairs clearly evident, mostly to lower portions.
