Silver Havdalah platter, Felix Horovitz. [Frankfurt am Main, 1903-1928].
Silver, repoussé and engraved (marked on back with German fineness mark 800 and a crown and moon; and with mark of the workshop of Felix Horovitz, "FELIX HOROVITZ").
Round platter with raised, graduated rim. Engraved onto the rim (in Hebrew) is the concluding verse of the introduction to the Havdalah ceremony: "I raise the cup of deliverance and invoke the name of the Lord" (Psalms 116:13). The inner margin is adorned with a symmetrical pattern of grapevine leaves, tendrils, and grape clusters. The center of the platter is circular and plain, made to support a havdalah wine cup.
The silversmith Felix Horovitz (1877-1928) and his brother, the silversmith Leo Horovitz – sons of Mordechai (Markus) HaLevi Horovitz, Chief Orthodox Rabbi of Frankfurt am Main – were active in Frankfurt in the first three decades of the 20th century, and created a diverse collection of objects of Judaica.
A good number of these items are part of the collection of the Jewish Museum, Frankfurt. One of these objects is a Kiddush (or Havdalah) cup very similar in design to the present platter. For comparison, see: Georg Heuberger, ed., Die Pracht der Gebote, Die Judaica-Sammlung des Jüdischen Museums Frankfurt am Main, Cologne, 2006, Item No. 101, pp. 150-51. For more information on silversmiths of the Horovitz family, see ibid., p. 49.
