Chumash with Haftarot in a decorated silver binding. Amsterdam, [ca. mid-18th century].
Silver, pierced, repoussé, engraved, and soldered (unmarked); wood and leather; print on paper.
Bound in original wooden binding, covered in contemporary leather, and encased in a luxurious silver binding. Both sides of the silver cover and spine are pierced and decorated with matching, symmetrical floral patterns and rich vegetal designs. Pair of matching silver clasps.
The book: Five Books of the Torah and the Five Scrolls with Targum Onkelos (only for the Pentateuch), Rashi commentary, and the Haftarah portions. Amsterdam: Shlomo ben Yosef Proops, [1734].
Chumash: 2-392, [2] leaves (title page lacking); 53 leaves of Haftarot (last three leaves lacking). 12.2 cm. Separate title page for the Haftarot. Fair condition. Tears and wear to first and last leaves. Losses to final leaves.
Binding: height: 13.5 cm. Width: 8 cm, spine width: 5.5 cm. Overall good condition. Minor blemishes, cracks, and bends. One clasp detached and its hook broken. Some losses to silver ornaments along the spine.
