Set of machzorim according to Carpentras rite (France), for Yom Kippur, the Three Festivals and the Four Fasts and Parashiot. Amsterdam: Hertz Levi Rofe (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur), and partners Hertz Levi Rofe and son-in-law Kosman (Three Festivals and Fasts), [1739-1762]. Complete four-volume set. First edition.
The Carpentras prayer and piyyut rites are unique to the southeast French community. Its text was copied in manuscript machzorim for community members until the local scribes were no longer able to meet the demand. At that point a young local Torah scholar named R. Avraham son of Shmuel de Monteux (Montel) began to print the unique Carpentras prayer rite. The two high holiday volumes were printed first, in 600 copies only, and are therefore particularly rare.
Gilt inscription of owner's name on back of binding of Rosh Hashanah volume: Samuel Alphandery", and stamps of "Leon Alphandery, Salon".
On margins of Yom Kippur volume, handwritten glosses and corrections.
Four volumes. Volume I (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur eve): [2], 14, [1], 15-17, [1], 18-71, [6], 72-114 leaves. Volume II (Yom Kippur): [2], 185 leaves. Volume III (Three Festivals): [2], 21, 19-30, [1], 31-33, [1], 34-149, [4], 150-219, [3] leaves. Volume IV (Four Fasts and Four Parashiot): [2], 3, 5-151, [1] leaves. 17-19 cm. Varying condition of volumes, fair-good to fair. Stains, including dampstains, and wax stains to some volumes. Traces of former dampness to some leaves in second volume. Wear. Tears and open tears, affecting text. Detached leaves in several places. Early leather bindings (non-uniform). Wear and defects to bindings.
There are several variants of the Three Festivals volume. Some copies, including the present one, include the text of Birkat HaMazon in the Passover Haggadah, and have different pagination (as documented in the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book).
