Two pairs of Torah finials. [Iraq, 19th century].
Silver, cast, repoussé and engraved (unmarked); gilt (on one pair).
1. Pair of Torah finials of a design mostly unique to Iraq and the Near East, with pear-shaped bodies surmounted by round domes tapering to a narrow point, in turn surmounted by ornaments in the form of an open hand ("hamsa"). Identical dedicatory inscriptions (Hebrew) engraved on the bodies of both finials: "These finials are of the woman M. Hannah wife of M. Yechezkel Ezra Ya’akov".
Eight chains with pendants are suspended from the body of each finial. The edges at the bases of the shafts are diagonally tilted to fit the particular dome-shaped tops typical of Iraqi Torah cases.
Height: 23 cm. Width: 4.5 cm. Overall good condition. Warping.
2. Pair of Torah finials of a design mostly unique to Iraq, with egg-shaped bodies, with smooth, plain surfaces; and at the joint connecting the body to the shaft, an ornament in the shape of a flattened sphere. Six chains with pendants are suspended from the top of each finial body. The edges at the bases of the shafts are diagonally tilted to fit the particular dome-shaped tops typical of Iraqi Torah cases.
Height: 17 cm. Width: 4.5 cm. Good condition. Slight warping.
