Torah Shield made by Posen – Frankfurt am Main, ca. 1900 – Klein Family

Torah shield. [Frankfurt am Main], Germany, [late 18th or early 20th century].
Silver, stamped, repoussé, and engraved (marked with maker’s mark, Posen, and with German quality marks).
Perimeter of shield adorned with rocailles and vegetal patterns in Rococo style. At the top is an ornament in the shape of a concave scallop shell, with a star in the middle. At center, in relief, are the Two Tablets of the Law (engraved with the abbreviated Ten Commandments in Hebrew). The Two Tablets are flanked by a pair of langued, rampant lions, and surmounted by a large crown clutched by the front paws of the lions.
Underneath the Tablets is a rectangular compartment for housing interchangeable plaques (four double-sided plaques enclosed). Suspension chain, partly consisting of links decorated in a vegetal pattern. The chain connects to a small convex rectangular plaque bearing a dedicatory inscription in German: "In Gedenken an unseren lieben / Andreas Klein Zahnarzt / Die Familie" (= "In memory of our beloved / Andreas Klein … / The Family".

Height: 30 cm. Width: 24 cm. Overall good condition. Chain may not be original. Three bells missing from bottom edge, two of them exchanged for silver pendants identical to decorative links of upper suspension chain.
