Torah shield. Vienna, 1857. Dedicatory inscription of the community of Szentes, Hungary.
Silver, repoussé, stamped, and engraved (marked with Viennese quality mark dated 1857, and with maker’s mark, "AK", probably Anton Kordon); gilt.
Perimeter of shield adorned with rocailles and vegetal patterns. Near the top is a large crown in relief, flanked on either side by a pair of langued, rampant lions, in gilt (screwed on), standing on top of a pair of architectonic columns. At center, in relief, are the Two Tablets of the Law (engraved with the abbreviated Ten Commandments in Hebrew), and underneath this, a rectangular compartment for housing interchangeable plaques (one plaque enclosed). At bottom, a convex medallion engraved with a dedicatory inscription (Hebrew): "Property of / the ‘Chevra Kadisha’ / of the holy community of Szentes [southern Hungary] / 5618 [1857] …"
Height: 31.5 cm. Width: 26 cm. Overall good condition. Slight warping and minute fractures to edges. No chain.
