Pair of Torah finials. North Africa (Algeria or Morocco), [second half of the 19th century].
Silver, pierced and engraved (unmarked); gilt.
Pair of large, majestic Torah finials. Finial bodies in gilt. Each body consists of a cup-like base and a hexagonal main section, with panels pierced in vegetal patterns, and with a dozen arched windows with suspension rings for bells at their apices; additional bells hang down from the ends of small chains suspended from the upper border of the body’s base. Ornaments in the form of small, button-like flowers adorn the bottom-middle of each side of each hexagon. Supported on tall, cylindrical shafts. Identical dedicatory inscriptions (Hebrew) are engraved on both finial bodies: "Gift of R. Shemuel / Nahon, may his Rock protect him, for the sake of the [eternal] rest of R. / Yosef, his brother of blessed memory, / and his wife Simcha / … Year ‘this / is the Law’ [Deuteronomy 4:44; in Hebrew, intended as the numerological equivalent of a particular Hebrew year (but unclear to which exact year they refer)]…"
Height: 38.5 to 39 cm. Width: 11 cm. Overall good condition. Most bells of finial bodies missing. Bells suspended from upper borders of bases may not be original.
