Opening: $2,500
Sold for: Unsold
Large paper sheet with illustration of the new Kimberley synagogue, micrography produced by artist Emmanuel (Menachem Mendel) Lipkin. [Kimberley?, Griqualand West, South Africa, ca. 1902].
Detailed architectural drawing of the front of the new synagogue in Kimberley. The building's contours, walls, domes and decorations form a meticulous micrography of the Book of Deuteronomy.
The micrography was evidently produced for the inauguration of the new Kimberley synagogue, in 1902. In the margins are Hebrew and English captions naming the synagogue, its location and identifying the micrography and its artist.

R. Emmanuel (Menachem Mendel) Lipkin (ca. 1874-1916) was a prayer leader and shochet in Liverpool, England, and later a rabbi in several communities in South Africa, including Oudtshoorn. Born in Nevel (Vitebsk governorate, Russian Empire; present-day Russia) to his father R. Yisrael Matityahu Lipkin (apparently a relative of the founder of the Musar movement, R. Yisrael Lipkin Salanter). R. Emmanuel Lipkin was known for his musical and artistic talent, and as a micrography artist; one of his works, a micrographic portrait of King Edward VII, is preserved in the British Royal Collection Trust (RCIN 923221).
