Spicebox. [Eastern Europe, probably Galicia, 19th century].
Silver (unmarked); filigree; granulation; gilt.
Spicebox in the form of a tower with a bell chamber surmounted by a tapering dome and a flagpole, bearing a forked, three-pronged flag. Four floral ornaments adorn each of the upper corners of the bell chamber. The spice container has an arched door rotating on a hinge. The door has a locking mechanism. At each of the four corners of the spice container is a thick architectonic column in filigree, surmounted by a flagpole bearing a gilt, two-pronged flag.
The base of the bottom tier is encompassed by a balcony, with each of its four corners adorned with a floral ornament.
The spicebox is supported on a short shaft with a square base, in turn supported by four legs shaped like animal legs, each with claws grasping a sphere.
Height: 30.5 cm. Maximal width: 6 cm. Overall good condition. Slight warping and minor fractures. Old soldering repairs. Faded gilt. Bell missing from bell chamber. Few fractures to filigree, with few old soldering repairs.
