Hanukkah lamp created by Ludwig (Judah) Wolpert. [New York, 1970s].
Silver, cast, sawed, and engraved (marked on back: "L. Wolpert"; "Sterling").
Hanukkah lamp supported on a semicircular base, with the branches in the form of eight flat-bodied lions protruding forward, each holding an oil font in its paws. The (removable) servant light (without a lion) is at center. Three curving rods rise up from the base to support the three Hebrew words "Lekha Na’eh Leshabe’ach" ("It befits to praise Thee", from the liturgical Hanukkah song "Ma’oz Tzur") in sawed letters cut out in a style typical of Wolpert’s artwork. The rods bearing the Hebrew words are reinforced from behind with a horizontal silver plate with a small round suspension hole.
For an identical Hanukkah lamp, see: Sharon Weiser-Ferguson (ed. and curator), "Forging Ahead: Wolpert and Gumbel, Israeli Silversmiths for the Modern Age" exhibition catalogue, The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, 2012 (Hebrew and English), pp. 87 and 153.
Height: 33 cm. Maximal width: 28 cm. Maximal depth: 15 cm. Good condition. Minor blemishes. One loose oil font.
