Women’s siddur in decorated silver binding. [Probably Germany, 19th century].
Silver, pierced and repoussé (unmarked); wood; printed on paper.
Both sides of the binding identically decorated with vegetal patterns, at their center appear a pair of rampant lions supporting a medallion topped with a crown. Long carrying chain. A pair of cast clasps, one decorated with the figure of Aaron, the other with the figure of Moses holding the Tablets of the Law.
The book: Order of Prayers for the Entire Year with Yiddish commentary. Amsterdam: Moshe ben Abraham Mendes Coutinho, 1705. With separate title pages for Tehillim and Order of Supplications. Title page illustrated with woodcuts depicting the three mitzvot for Women: Challah, Niddah and Lighting the Sabbath lamp.
