Pair of Torah Finials. Sittard, The Netherlands, 1852-1863.
Silver, cast and turned (one finial marked with Dutch quality mark, in use from 1814, and second finial marked with different quality mark – a sword – and with maker’s mark, "G. Berg", active in Sittard, ca. 1852 to 1863); filigree.
Elegant pair of Torah finials, decorated in dense silver thread (filigree), in vegetal patterns. Hexagonal bodies, in shape of three-tiered architectonic towers, with "balconies" along the borders of adjacent tiers. Each side bears a window with a niche for a bell. Each finial surmounted by a crown, in turn surmounted by a large sphere. Hexagonal cup-shaped bases, in filigree. Cylindrical shafts.
Two pairs of Torah finials made by this particular silversmith can be found in the collection of the Jewish (Joods Historisch) Museum, Amsterdam (Item Nos. M002616 and M000036).
Height: 39.5 cm. Maximal width: 12.5 cm. Overall good condition. Slight fractures and old soldering repairs. blemishes. Slight corrosion. Some bells not original, and numerous bells missing.
