Two Sabbath lamps ("Mesrejeh"). Yemen, [19th century].
Soapstone (steatite), carved; iron rings and chain.
Two star-shaped oil lamps. One is in the form of a large, eight-point star, and includes a large, ring-shaped handle for carrying and suspension, inserted into a small ring surmounting a large protuberance at the center of the oil pan. The other is smaller, and in the form of a ten-point star, and includes an iron suspension chain, similarly inserted into a small ring surmounting a large protuberance at the center of the oil pan. In some parts of Yemen, lamps such as these also served as Hanukkah lamps.
Lamp No. 1: Width: 22 cm. Height: 8 cm. Lamp No. 2: Width: 17 cm. Height: 5 cm. Overall good condition. Minor fractures to star points. Remnants of oil.
