Pair of Torah Finials. The Netherlands, [early 20th century].
Silver, cast and turned (marked with Dutch quality mark, in use beginning 1814; and with maker’s mark, probably G. J. van der Bergh Sr., active 1900-35); filigree.
Heavy pair of Torah finials, decorated in dense silver-thread filigree in a vegetal pattern. Hexagonal bodies, in shape of three-tiered tower, with “balconies” separating the individual tiers. Each side of hexagon with window and niche for a bell. At the top of each finial is a crown surmounted by a sphere. Each body with a hexagonal cup-like base adorned in filigree and with bells. Cylindrical shafts.
A Torah crown in filigree and two pairs of Torah finials – all highly reminiscent of the present pair of finials – can be found in the collection of the Jewish (Joods Historisch) Museum, Amsterdam (Item Nos. MB00685, M014232, and MB00285).
Height: 44 cm. Maximal width: 13 cm. Overall good condition. Minor blemishes. Three bells missing. Some of the bells may not be original.
