A Letter by Boris Schatz from the Early Years of Bezalel / Photograph from a Purim Ball at Bezalel – Yaakov Ben Dov
Opening: $150
Unsold
1. A letter handwritten and signed by Boris Schatz, on an early, official stationery of Bezalel. Jerusalem, June 1907.
The letter is addressed to an artist-friend of Schatz in Bulgaria. Schatz writes to him that in about a month, he will come to Bulgaria to "enlist members to the Bezalel Association" and asks for his help. In addition, Schatz writes that he intends to convene a meeting to establish "the purpose of Bezalel" and complains that he is missing "a painter" – "If some painter asks you about Bezalel, tell him to wait for my arrival" (Hebrew).
[1] leaf, 27 cm. Fair condition. Several pieces are missing in the edges. The letter has been restored, which caused ink-smudging.
2. A photograph of Bezalel students at a Purim ball. [Photographer: Yaakov Ben Dov, 1929 or earlier].
A sharp, high-quality photograph depicting students wearing costumes, at the yard of Bezalel, by Glicenstein's sculpture "Messiah". A similar photograph, depicting the same group of students in identical costumes, was printed on a postcard issued by the Israel Museum and there it is attributed to the photographer Ben Dov.
16.5X22 cm. Good condition. A tear to left edge. Folds and creases. Mounted on cardboard. Slightly faded at margins. Blemishes to verso of cardboard.
Provenance: The Rimon Family Collection.
