Large Torah Shield – Vienna / Hungary or Serbia, 1847

Torah shield. Made in Vienna, [ca. 1847], dedicatory inscription from "Kanisha, " probably either Nagykanizsa, southwestern Hungary, or Kanjiža, Serbia.
Silver, repoussé, stamped, and engraved (marked with Viennese quality mark dated to the 1840s, and with faded maker’s mark).
Large Torah shield, shaped like a shield and adorned with vegetal patterns. In the upper part is a large, 3-dimensional crown in relief, fastened onto the shield with screws. In the middle are the Two Tablets of the Law (engraved with the abbreviated Ten Commandments), flanked by a large pair of architectonic columns. At the bottom is a rectangular compartment for housing interchangeable plaques (no plaques included), and underneath this a dedicatory inscription (Hebrew) is engraved: "Ner Tamid Society / Year 5607 [1847] … / here in Kanisha".
An additional inscription is engraved at the base of the large crown at the top of the shield: "A crown of the Torah, the frontlet, the holy diadem". Lengthy suspension chain, partly detached.

Height: 37 cm. Width: 30 cm. Overall good condition. Warping to edges and several fractures. One of the rings meant to connect the chain detached; piece measuring 1.5X0.6 cm missing at point of attachment. Two old soldering repairs on back.
