Large Torah shield. [Vienna, ca. 1920s].
Silver, repoussé, stamped and engraved (marked with Austro-Hungarian fineness marks, in use 1886-1922, and maker’s mark LM = Leopold & Ludwig Mandl, Vienna); parcel-gilt.
Large Torah shield, centered with a pair of lions rampant holding the Tablets of the Law (engraved with the Ten Commandments), above a rectangular compartment for interchangeable plaques (four parcel-gilt silver plaques included, three of them double-sided, each marked).
A cartouche at the bottom bears a dedication inscription: Gespendet durch Ernst Popper und Frau gebor. Julie Jakobi [Donated by Ernst Popper and his wife Julie née Jakobi].
Two further inscriptions are engraved on the reverse: at the top,
"Zum Andenken an unsere Eltern / Majer Popper and Frau geb./ Regina Urmenyi" [In memory of our parents Majer Popper and his wife Regina née Urmenyi]; and at the bottom, an inscription likely referring to the Viennese silversmith who engraved the inscriptions:
"Ausgeführt von M. Österreicher Goldschmied Wien II. Praterstr. 18".
