Over thirty letters by Rebbe Menashe Klein ("HaKatan"), Rabbi of Anshei Liadi, dean of Beit Shearim yeshiva and Rabbi of Ungvar community. Brooklyn, New York, 1963-1977.
Lengthy responsa letters discussing various halachic topics, sent in answer to questions of R. Ephraim Greenblatt, author of Rivevot Efraim, then serving as rabbi in Memphis, Tennessee – a close disciple of R. Moshe Feinstein.
The letters are typewritten, with his handwritten signatures: "Menashe HaKatan", and many corrections, additions and deletions in his handwriting. Most letters feature his original signatures (in two letters, a photocopy of the original letter was originally sent).
Rebbe Menashe Klein ("HaKatan") of Ungvar (1923-2011), a leading American posek. Born in Ungvár (Uzhhorod) to a rabbinic family, descended from R. Amram Blum, author of Beit Shearim, Rabbi of Khust and Berettyóújfalu. He studied in the yeshiva of R. Yosef Elimelech Kahana, Rabbi of Ungvár, becoming one of his leading disciples. After surviving the Holocaust, he reached the United States, becoming an intimate associate of the Rebbe of Sanz-Klausenburg. He served as rabbi in the Anshei Liadi community in New York.
He became known as a leading posek who responded to halachic queries in all fields of Jewish law. He established the Beit Shearim yeshiva and Ungvar community in the United States, where he served as rebbe and rabbi, and later established Kiryat Ungvar in Jerusalem with a Beit Midrash, yeshiva and community offices. He is best known for his 19-part responsa series Mishneh Halachot.
