A Descriptive Geography and Brief Historical Sketch of Palestine [English translation of "Tevu'ot Ha'Aretz" by Rabbi Joseph (Yehosef) Schwarz]. Translated by Isaac Leeser. Illustrated With Maps and Numerous Engravings. Philadelphia: A. Hart, 1850. First English translation, first edition to be published in the United States.
English translation of the book "Tevu'ot Ha'Aretz" by Rabbi Joseph (Yehosef) Schwarz. Includes frontispiece portrait of the author, two (foldout) maps of Palestine, and twelve lithographic plates with illustrations of sites in Palestine.
After his comprehensive and groundbreaking work on Palestine had been published in Jerusalem, Joseph Schwarz was sent to the US in 1849 as an emissary, taking up residence in New York where his brother was living. While there, he became acquainted with Isaac Leeser, an influential Jewish philosopher, speechwriter, and orator, and one of the founding fathers of the modern American Jewish community. Among his many exploits, Leeser served as a literary editor and translator, and specialized in translating religious and sacred Hebrew texts into English. Recognizing its priceless value, Leeser states in the translator's introduction to the book: "It is to be hoped that this book may contribute to extend the knowledge of Palestine, and rouse many to study the rich treasures which our ancient literature affords".
