Some 70 early photographs of Ottoman Jerusalem and its sites, unsigned by the photographers. [Ca. middle to late 19th century].
Photographs of Jerusalem, in black-and-white; many of them taken by different photographers from the same vantage points, showing significant changes in the appearance of the city, its buildings, and its roads. Included among them: • Numerous photographs of the Old City Walls and the Temple Mount; • various photos of the Mount of Olives through the duration of this period; various photos of the Temple Mount Plaza; • and photos of the gates of the Old City, Tombs of the Kings, Hezekiah’s Pool, the Mughrabi Quarter, and more.
Most of the photos are printed in large format and mounted onto plates of thick paper; paper labels bearing the name of renowned photographer Francis Frith – widely regarded as the first professional photographer to document the Holy Land – appear on the backs of three of the photographs.
