14 photographs by the photographer Leon Azoulay, documenting transit camps (Ma'abarot) and asbestos projects; mainly in Herzliya and in Bat Yam. [Early 1960s; most of the photographs are dated 1962-1963].
Photographs recording the life of new immigrants in Israel, among them photographs from Nachlat Ada and Neve Amal in Herzliya, photographs from Bat-Yam, one photograph of a demonstration against a law proposal concerning liquidation and restoration of poor neighborhoods, and more.
The photographs, all or part of them, were designated for publication in the French newspaper Le Journal d'Israel published in Israel (on the back of six photographs appear the name of the paper and instructions for printing, written by hand).
The photographs are signed on the back, by hand: "Photo Leon Azoulay" and one is ink-stamped" Photo: Leon Azoulay…Holon" (Hebrew). Most photographs are titled and dated on the back.
Leon Azoulay , born in Morocco, worked as a photographer in France and immigrated to Israel in the 1950s. In Israel he worked for the newspaper Le Journal d'Israel and documented mainly the tough reality in transit camps and poor neighborhoods. When the paper closed Azoulay retired from photography.
