Pair of Torah finials. Jerusalem, [late 19th or early 20th century].
Silver, cast, engraved, and punched.
Jerusalemite Torah finials, with a design showing evidence of both European and Oriental influences. Upper part of body in form of hexagonal crown, tapering upward. A band in the shape of a hexagonal prism separates the upper and lower halves of the body. The body is supported on a cylindrical shaft with a hexagonal, calyx-like top. Six chains with bells at their ends. Surface engraved with simple geometric and vegetal patterns. On one of the two finials, the apex or "crown" is adorned with pointed horseshoe arches, whereas on the other finial, the apex is ornamented with flowers. One of the two shafts is marked "Jerusalem" (Hebrew).
Height: 23-24 cm. Some warping and few fractures. One missing chain.

Tall, pear-shaped Torah finials, in Persian style. Conical head, surmounted by Star of David with the Hebrew word "Zion". Body decorated in vegetal patterns, and with four medallions each with a depiction of one of the four animals mentioned in the Ethics of the Fathers (Pirkei Avot), namely the leopard, eagle, deer [or gazelle] and lion, accompanied by Hebrew captions with the corresponding quotes from the text in reference to the respective animals: "Be bold as a leopard," "light as an eagle," "fleeting as a deer," "and mighty as a lion". Body of finial supported on cylindrical shaft with spherical ornament at top. Body and head of finials decorated in repoussé, and engraved with vegetal and geometric patterns. Six chains with bells at their ends. Hebrew dedicatory inscription engraved onto shafts: "[…] dedicated by Rahel daughter of Hannah, Yoheved daughter of Rahel."

1. Body decorated with tiny silver spherules, and placed at the center of an ornament in the shape of the calyx of a flower, from which bells are suspended. Possibly made by a silversmith of a Yemenite origin. Height: 14 cm.
2. Finial bodies and shafts decorated with widthwise bands of silver thread. Chains with bells suspended from bodies. Height: 11.5 cm. Warping. Missing ornaments (?). Missing chains and bells.

Two Torah pointers of a basic form generally characteristic of pointers from Libya, Tunisia, and Algeria, and presumably produced in Jerusalem by a craftsman originating from one of the above countries. Flat pointers; their upper segments, surmounted by a suspension ring, are rectangular, gradually widening toward the middles. The lower segments then taper, narrowing toward the wrist. Both bear dedicatory inscriptions. Clenched hand with long, gently flexed index finger and cuffed wrist.
1. With vegetal and geometric patterns and two Stars of David. Hebrew dedicatory inscription: "[…] donated to the Sham'ah Synagogue by Hayyim Mahsoumi […] toward the elevation of the soul of my father Avraham son of Yehudah […]." Length: 26.5 cm.
2. With dense vegetal and geometric patterns. Hebrew dedicatory inscription: "[…] toward the elevation of the soul of […] Ya'akov David Mizrahi son of Miriam, passed away on the 23rd of Tammuz 5715 [July 13, 1955] […]." Length: 29 cm.
