Machzor in silver-decorated binding. Venice, ca. 1750.
Print on paper; cardboard and leather; silver, cast, pierced and engraved (unmarked); gilt.
Brown leather binding decorated identically on both sides, with a large, impressive guilloche comprising leaf and flower decorations. At top of front binding, another decoration shaped as a pair of palms spread out for the priestly blessing. Around the edges is a thin belt designed as a chain of flowers (on back binding, these decorations only appear near the four corners). Large clasp, decorated with an identical pattern. All decorations pierced and gilt, and nailed onto the binding.
The book: Year-round machzor according to the Italian rite (Part I only). Venice: Bragadin, 1750.
At beginning of book, half-title by Francesco Griselini (1717-1787), with his print signature, depicting the Passover meal and bearing the Hebrew caption "Festivals".
224 leaves; 16 leaves (Tefillat Yesharim, with divisional title page), 18.5 cm. Overall good condition. Some stains. Ownership inscription on title page: "Michael Modena".
Binding: 13.5X19 cm. Overall good condition. Some defects and wear, mainly to spine. One flower decoration on back endpaper loose.

Silver, repoussé, engraved, cast and cut; with assayer marks of Giuseppe Vernoni (active 1814-1824 in Turin, Kingdom of Sardinia), standard marks; print on paper; leather.
Machzor bound in original leather binding, covered with an elaborate silver binding. Both sides of binding decorated identically, with frames decorated in a rich vegetal pattern, with large floral decorations in the center. Spine divided into five parts and decorated in matching vegetal pattern. Pair of silver clasps.
The book: Year-round machzor according to the Italian rite, Part I. [Venice: Bragadin, 1772]. Inscriptions in Italian script on front endpapers: family inscriptions from Rome, ca. 1850s-1860s, and Yotzer for Shabbat Chol HaMoed Pesach by R. Michael Chaim di Segni [R. Michael Chaim di Segni was Chief Rabbi of Rome from 1750 until his passing in 1772]. Glosses, inscriptions and additions to margins of many leaves in volume.
Machzor: 2-135, 176-271 leaves. Copy lacking 54 leaves (title page and leaves 136-175, 272-284). 16.5 cm. Gilt edges. Fair-good condition. Stains, creases and wear. Tears and open tears, affecting text. Inscriptions to endpapers. Glosses and additions. Leather-coated silver binding.

Silver, cast, repoussé and engraved (clasps marked with Modena city mark and with the mark of silversmith Giovanni Manzini, active in Modena ca. 1840); print on paper.
Cover decorated on both sides with identical vegetal designs, each featuring a large central cartouche and four corner ornaments. Spine with matching central oval medallion. Medallion on front cover engraved with the initials MNF. Pair of matching clasps.
The book: Year-round Ashkenazi rite Machzor, Part I. Venice: Bragadina, [1756]. Bound with: Tefillat Yesharim, Venice: Bragadina, [1754]; Book of Tehillim with supplications and prayers. Venice: Vendramina, [1753].

Silver, repoussé, engraved and cast (marked four times with Rome city mark, in use from 1815 onward).
Ornate silver binding, decorated with vegetal motifs. Family coat of arms are featured on both sides of the cover: at center of the front cover, a pitcher pouring water into a basin – the coat of arms of the Levi family; and at center of the back cover, a bird holding a branch in its beak, standing atop a mountain inscribed with the letter A – possibly the coat of arms of the Artom family. Pair of matching cast clasps.

This “machzor” (special prayer book, in this case dedicated to the “Sheloshah Regalim”, the Three Pilgrimage Festivals, namely Passover, Shavu’ot, and Sukkot), bound in original red leather binding, stamped on back and front boards and on spine with gilt impressions. The initials “B.F.” are stamped in gilt on back and front. Original pair of silver buckles.
185, [1] leaf, 17 cm. Overall good condition. Few stains. Several loose leaves. Notation in ink on title page. Binding in good condition, with slight wear to edges. Gilt edges on book block.

Silver, cast, repoussé, and stamped; pierced silver (marked with fineness mark “800” – in use from the late 19th century until 1933 – and with a spurious Venetian mark resembling the Lion of Saint Mark [Leone di San Marco]); print on paper.
Binding decorated with vegetal designs in a lattice pattern, and corner ornaments in the form of clusters of grape on both sides of the cover. Central cartouche on front cover with the Levi family coat of arms (a hand pouring water from a jug into a basin); central cartouche on back cover with a seven-branched menorah. Spine ornamented with matching vegetal pattern and a Star of David. Pair of matching clasps.
The book: Tefillot Yisrael according to Ashkenazi rite. Livorno: S. Belforte & C., 1905. Hebrew and Italian.

Leaf from a parchment machzor manuscript. [Ashkenazic lands, ca. 14th century].
Large-format parchment leaf. Square Ashkenazic script, vocalized, on both sides of leaf. Letters in large script, 17 lines per page.
This leaf was reused as a binding or a folder, but is preserved almost in its entirety, apart from several defects and tears.
The leaf features a section from a kerovah piyyut by R. Moshe son of R. Kalonymus, recited in Ashkenazic communities at Shacharit of the eighth day of Pesach, from the kiklar piyyut Chacham Lev VeAmitz Koach.
