A unique collection comprising some 250 photographs of the Holy Land in the late Ottoman period. [Early 20th century].
Roughly 250 photographs produced at the time of the visit to the Holy Land by George Henry Judd of the Royal Geographical Society, most of them likely taken by Judd himself, using his own personal camera which he brought along from one place to the next.
Among other things, the photos provide rare documentation of sites Judd managed to reach, including burial caves; the inner chambers of churches and other places of worship; panoramic views from all over the country, taken from rooftops and the upper decks of towers; and pictures of Judd himself, typically in the company of armed escorts, tour guides, accompanying colleagues, religious figures, and other people.
Included among the photographs: The Dome of the Rock; Church of the Holy Sepulchre; the Old City of Jerusalem’s Damascus Gate and Jaffa Gate (the latter with the short-lived Ottoman clocktower in the background); Hebron; Tiberias and the Sea of Galilee; the Dead Sea; Jericho; Tower of the Forty Martyrs (minaret of the White Mosque of Ramle); Haifa; inhabitants drawing water from the cisterns of the Temple Mount plaza; the home (just prior to completion) of the German architect, archaeologist, and Protestant missionary Conrad Schick on Jerusalem’s HaNevi'im Street; a Jewish wedding; female students at Jerusalem’s School for the Blind; and more.
Most of the photographs are dated and titled in English handwriting on verso, presumably by Judd himself. Some hand-colored photos. Many photos in multiple copies (at times exhibiting slight variations in hue).
Judd donated his collections and finds to The British Museum upon his return from his travels to the Near East, ca. 1910. Some of these collections and individual items are mentioned in various books and catalogues.
Some 250 photographs. Size and condition vary (most photos approx. 9X8.5). Overall good condition.
Enclosed: Photocopy of George Henry Judd’s certificate of membership, received upon acceptance to the Royal Geographical Society.

Exceptionally large and wide-ranging collection comprising hundreds of publications – most of them printed by the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) and its various branches, dating from the time of the Six-Day War, and including orders, official statements, information sheets, battlefront notices, leaflets issued by individual combat units, song sheets, official documents, and other material. Israel, June 1967 (several items from earlier and later periods). English and Hebrew.
Some 750 printed items of ephemera, including:
• Daily order informing readers of the imminent launch of the war, hand signed by Major General Avraham Yoffe, commander of the 31st Armored Division, along with a handwritten comment: “Written and distributed to the soldiers on June 4, 1967” (a day before the outbreak of the war). Additional handwritten notations appear on the reverse side; in all likelihood, these were jotted down in the actual course of battle, and they include the names of various military units along with reports on their respective condition, and additional notations.
• Official statement from the day of the liberation of the Western Wall (June 7), issued by IDF Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren (Hebrew): “I speak to you from the plaza of the Western Wall… The dream of all generations has been realized [here] before our eyes… you have today fulfilled the oath of generations, ‘If I forget thee O Jerusalem may my right hand forget its cunning’”. In addition, the collection includes two official statements, one issued by Rabbi Goren on the Sabbath Eve prior to the outbreak of the war, and the other on the actual day the war began.
• A wide range of publications issued by the various commands and major IDF branches, specifically the Central Command, the Southern Command, the Air Force, and Navy.
• A wide variety of combat leaflets issued in strictly limited editions, including issues of the journal of the Harel Brigade; issues of “Chativon”; issues of the army magazine “Machanayim”; Issue No. 2 of “Tashbetzahal” (“IDF Crossword”); the magazine “Kidon UShlof”; issues of “Dorbanei HaPladah”; and numerous other publications of all kinds.
• Hundreds of issues of “Press Bulletin” (English) and “Yediot LaItonut” (“Press Releases”; Hebrew), two types of breaking-news bulletins released by the Israel Government Press Office, providing the earliest available documentation from the battlefront; proclamations on behalf of the official bodies; speeches delivered by senior officials; and more (leaflets in English, leaflets for the benefit of the Hebrew-language media, and maps).
• “Israel Defense Forces, Bulletin No. 1” (Hebrew and Arabic), the first statement of its kind to be issued by the Military Government in the Occupied Territories, listing eight orders to be followed by the local population.
• The first printing of the lyrics to the song "Yerusahalayim shel Barzel” [Jerusalem of Iron], famously written by Meir Ariel, a combatant in the Paratroopers Brigade, after Neomi Shemer's "Yerushalayim shel Zahav" [Jerusalem of Gold]. Published by the “Temple Mount Press” of the brigade command on June 12, 1967 – just a few days after the lyrics were composed.
• Ten “battle sheets” of the Tel HaShomer Hospital (precursor to today’s Tel HaShomer Medical Center) providing IDF guidelines to the hospital’s medical staff (Hebrew); apparently, these were the only pages to be printed.
• A double-sided game board, produced by the IDF Education Corps, one side intended for checkers and the game “Tachanot”, and the other side meant for “Catch the Infiltrator, ” a game to entertain soldiers specially devised by the IDF.
• And more.
Some 750 items of ephemera. Size and condition vary. Overall good condition. Creases, stains, punch holes, and minor tears. Several items in multiple copies.

"تقرير المخابرات الدورى رقم ٤٤ إسرائيل" – Wide-ranging intelligence report, classified as "Top Secret", prepared by the Egyptian Ministry of War in the lead-up to the Yom Kippur War; includes detailed diagrams of the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) strongholds along the length of the Suez Canal, deployment of IDF forces in the Sinai Desert, IDF Air Force activity, Senior IDF officers, etc. January 1973. Arabic.
The present report comprises hundreds of pages of comprehensive intelligence material, including wide-ranging information regarding the IDF and the State of Israel. This material clearly served in preparations for the Egyptian invasion of Israeli-held territory at the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War. The report is divided into three main sections, separated by thick paper partitions:
• Israel’s military situation (the largest segment of the report), including a list of the hundreds of artillery positions along the length of the Suez Canal, giving the coordinates of each position; a survey of manpower deployed in various strongholds; information regarding IDF commanders and generals, along with their photos, and details of their past functions and their personal lives; information on dozens of types of weaponry, airplanes, and battle material in Israel’s possession, along with photos, specifying the weapons’ capabilities and where they were produced; anticipated flight times of IDF Air Force planes from moment of take-off till arrival at battlefront; survey of IDF maneuvers and war-readiness; a detailed survey of the ongoing military activity of IDF forces; and more.
• Israel’s political situation, including a comprehensive overview of the state of the alliance between Israel and the United States; international reaction to the effective termination of Soviet influence in Egypt; Israel’s situation at the United Nations; the massacre of Israeli Olympic athletes in Munich; and more.
• Israel’s internal situation, giving a detailed account of friction within the ranks of the ruling political party, the issue of who would succeed Prime Minister Golda Meir, various forms of internal tension plaguing Israel (sectarian tensions, problems with new immigrants, struggles between the religious and secular sectors), Israeli exploration ventures in search of oil in the Sinai Desert, and more.
The report begins with the conclusions of the Egyptian chief of military intelligence, Ibrahim Fuad Nasser, stating that there is no political solution to the central problems of the Middle East because it is impossible to bring about a change in Israel’s positions and policies, and that "one fact has now became certain: Israel will never [be convinced to] evacuate Arab lands except by force" p. [13]).
In original thick-paper cover, bearing the emblem of the Republic of Egypt.
[24], 203 pages + [33] plates (diagrams, photos of weapons, photos of IDF commanding officers). Approx. 32.5 cm. Good condition. Minor stains and creases. Tears and small open tears to edges of thick-paper file partitions. Abrasions and wear to cover and spine.

A unique copy – written in calligraphic handwriting and illuminated with colorful illustrations – of the tale by Haim Hazaz, "Chatan Damim" (lit. "Bridegroom of Blood"; this copy was submitted as a final art project by the Bezalel graduating art student Dina Merhav); parting gift presented to Moshe Sharett upon his departure from the Knesset, and upon his embarkment on his last diplomatic mission. Jerusalem, 1956.
Manuscript on thick, high-quality paper, with illuminated title page and opening initial, and with colorful illustrations in the body of the text. Clothbound, in original binding, and with an additional illustration glued onto face of front board. Inked stamp of the Bezalel school on final leaf.
A handwritten dedication (presumably written by Golda Meir) appears on the first page: "To Moshe, our dearest, upon your departure on a great mission, may this blessing from all of us accompany you". This dedication is hand signed by more than 60 government ministers, Knesset members, and other notable Israeli personalities, including Golda Meir, Zalman Shazar, Minister of Trade Pinchas Sapir, Minister of Labor Dov Yosef, Minister of Transportation Zalman Aran, Minister of Agriculture Peretz Naftali, Chairman of the Keren HaYesod foundation Eliyahu Dobkin, Secretary to the Prime Minister Teddy Kollek, Secretary of the Mapai political party Giora Yoseftal, Knesset Speaker Kadish Luz, Israel Ambassador to the Soviet Union Mordechai Namir, and many others (some of the signatures appear on the reverse side of the page).
Apparently, the present copy was presented to Sharett as a parting gift after he stepped down as Israel’s prime minister and foreign minister – the latter being a position he filled since the establishment of the State of Israel. It also marked the occasion of his departure on his last official task, a mission for which he set out in September, 1956, involving visits to countries throughout Asia and Africa for the purpose of improving Israel’s relations with those countries, having been appointed Israel’s "Goodwill Ambassador at Large". The mission was effectively Sharett’s final task as an Israeli politician and statesman; once he completed his term as Israel’s second prime minister, he never returned to the Knesset. Nor did he play any political role following his ambassadorial journey.
The creator of the manuscript,
Dina Merhav (née Gross; 1936-2022), was an Israeli artist and sculptor. Born in Vinkovci (then Yugoslavia, today in Croatia). Immigrated to Israel with her family in 1949 and graduated in 1957 from the Department of Graphic Design of what is now the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. As her artistic career progressed, she began specializing in metal sculpture, and in particular outdoor sculpture – a field which earned her international acclaim; among other places, her works were put on public display in the United States, Switzerland, Macedonia, Croatia, China, India, and Turkey.
[47] pages. with text and illustrations. 29 cm. Good condition. Stains. Slightly loose gatherings. Binding stained, with minor wear. Blemishes and abrasions to illustration adhering to front board.
