Moshe Murro (1888-1957), "Tefilla" ("Prayer"), relief. Jerusalem, [1906-29]. Marked (Hebrew) "MM"; marked on back (Hebrew-English) "Bezalel moro." Arched plaque featuring a Jewish figure wrapped in a "tallit" prayer shawl. On top, a menorah with intertwined branches, typical of the Bezalel School. Title at bottom (Hebrew): "Tefilla" ("Prayer"). Moshe Murro (1888-1957), was a Bezalel School artist. He was a painter and sculptor who specialized in reliefs.

Notepad holder, from Elhanan Hefetz's workshop for artistic leather bookbinding and other tooled leather products, one of the workshops operating under the auspices of the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts. Jerusalem, [ca. late 1920s].
Leather-covered notepad holder. On front, inlaid carved olivewood plaque, depicting a harp suspended from a willow tree, over a background showing the sun rising over houses (inspired by Psalms 137:1-2, "By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. Upon the willows in the midst thereof did we hang up our harps").
Approx. 24X18.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Minor wear and blemishes. Abrasion to leather.

"HaHalutzim" [The Pioneers], a collection of silhouettes by Meir Gur-Arieh", "accompanied by lyrics to songs of the Halutzim, collected and compiled by Mordechai Narkiss". Aleph-Bet, illustrations by Ze'ev Raban, rhymes by Levin Kipnis, Bezalel-Jerusalem. Berlin: "HaSefer", 1923.
Hebrew alphabet reader with poems by Levin Kipnis and illustrations in gold and vivid colors by Ze'ev Raban, one of the first teachers at Bezalel. The book, printed in Berlin for Jewish children in Europe, integrates images representing the attributes of the Land of Israel and Zionist messages regarding immigration to Palestine. Its impressive illustrations and meticulous printing turned it into a milestone in Hebrew children's literature.
[16] leaves (heavy paper), 24.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains. Abrasions to bottom of leaves. Bookplate and ownership stamp. Damage and abrasions to binding (mainly to extremities). Tears and wear to spine.

Ze'ev Raban (1890-1970); sketch for "Menorah" memorial candle label. Ink and pencil on paper; stamped (Hebrew) "Ze'ev Raban, Workshop for Industrial Art (previously Gur-Arieh and Raban), Bezalel Jerusalem". The label is divided into four pointed arches, through which important sites in Palestine can be seen: the skyline of Jerusalem, Rachel's Tomb, the tomb of Rabbi Meir Ba'al HaNes. The fourth arch remained empty. Topped by a medallion depicting hands spread for the priestly blessing. The "Menorah" candle factory was established in Tel Aviv in 1926 and is still producing memorial candles decorated with the same label designed by Ze'ev Raban. For the final version of the label, see Raban Remembered, p. 109.
21X33 cm. Fair-good condition. Tears, some open, to edges. One tear reinforced on verso with transparent tape. Stains. Paper strip mounted to center. Matted.

Cental blooming vase from which the seven species grow and spread to both sides. The size and theme of the sketch may indicate that the planned work was a ceramic mural.

Ze'ev Raban (1890-1970), two sketches for sculptural ornaments. Pencil on paper. Stamped (Hebrew) "Ze'ev Raban, Workshop for Industrial Art (previously Gur-Arieh and Ze'ev Raban), Bezalel Jerusalem".
Two sketches: • Shield-shaped, depicting a lion and a rosette. A similar rosette by Raban, called also "David's rose", can be seen on the King David Hotel façade (see: "Ze'ev Raban, Hebrew Symbolist", by Bat Sheva Goldman Idah. Tel Aviv and Jerusalem: Tel Aviv Museum of Art and Yad Ben Zvi, 2001. p. 149). A Sheet folded in half, approx. 34.5X29 cm. Good condition. Creases, tears and minor stains. Matted. • Two stylized column capitals depicting Isaiah's vision, "And a wolf shall live with a lamb, and a leopard shall lie with a kid" (Isaiah 11:6). One depicts a leopard and a kid surrounded by bunches of grapes and vine tendrils; the second depicts a winged lamb and a wolf. Titled "Building Ornaments" (Hebrew). This sketch may have been part of the decoration plans for the YMCA building, some of which, especially the reliefs and sculptural ornaments, were entrusted to Raban. Approx. 28X47.5 cm. Good condition. Stains and creases. Pinholes. Small tears to edges. Matted.

Ze'ev Raban (1890-1970), Palm Tree, sketch for a stained-glass window at the YMCA building, [early 1930s]. Pencil on tracing paper. Stamped (Hebrew) "Ze'ev Raban, Workshop for Industrial Art (previously Gur-Arieh and Raban), Bezalel Jerusalem". The triple stained-glass window planned by Raban (one panel of which is seen in this sketch) was eventually not erected. A color sketch depicting all three panels of the planned triptych, in their proposed complete state, is held in the collection of the Israel Museum.
