"It all depends on you", poster issued by the "Haganah". Palestine, [ca. 1947]. Hebrew and English. Design: Itamar David.
Depicting the "Hish" (field corps of the Haganah) logo alongside a pointing hand on a black background and the text "It all depends on you" in Hebrew and English. Text at bottom: "Haganah poster no. 2". The poster and the logo were both designed by Itamar David.
Itamar (Ismar) David (1910-1996), illustrator, graphic designer, typographer and the designer of the Hebrew font "David". David studied at the Charlottenburg School of Applied Arts in Berlin and in 1932 immigrated to Palestine, settling in Jerusalem. Over the 1930s and 1940s he became one of the leading graphic artists of the Zionist Movement, designing some of the first postage stamps, posters and banknotes of the State of Israel. His proposal for the emblem of the State of Israel was one of the three proposals discussed by the committee tasked with choosing the emblem. In 1952, he moved to New York, where he designed several monuments, parks and synagogues and created important works in the field of Hebrew calligraphy.

As a sign and proof that our city, in the midst of the tumult of building and doing, pays attention to the values of spirit and culture, which make life worthwhile. An official Independence Day poster was issued in Israel each year between 1949 and 2017. The posters were issued by the Information Center of the Ministry of Culture and Sport and distributed to educational institutions. This color poster was designed for the seventh Independence Day (1955); the illustration depicts a turret formed of twelve bricks bearing the emblems of the Twelve Tribes, topped by seven Israeli flags.
Approx. 66X98 cm. Good condition. Creases and fold lines. Stains. An open tear to upper left corner.

The poster depicts Israel with its new borders, from the Jordan River to the Suez Canal; the word "Hitnachalut" (Settlement) is spread over the old territory of Israel and the word "LeAltar" (Immediately) is spread over the territory captured by Israel in the Six-Day War – the Sinai Desert. Right margin text: "Independence Day 1969" (Hebrew).

A postcard presumably printed to mark the acquittal of Jewish officer Alfred Dreyfus in 1906. Hand-signed by him.
The postcard depicts Dreyfus after his acquittal, wearing the uniform of the French army with the medal of the Legion of Honor displayed on his chest (Dreyfus was awarded the medal in a public ceremony in July 1906, a week after he was cleared of all charges by the court). Signed at bottom: "A. Dreyfus".
Gilt edges; a printed caption on bottom, next to the signature, reads "Collection C. Coquelin" (the postcard may have been commissioned by French actor and pro-Dreyfusard Benoit-Constant Coquelin, who had close ties with Dreyfus during the affair).
Undivided postcard. Approx. 9X13.5 cm. Good condition.
Provenance: Bought at Maggs Bros. Ltd. Rare books, autographs, manuscripts and miniatures, 1995.

A pro-Dreyfus board game that was enclosed with an issue of the L'Aurore newspaper, the liberal newspaper that published Émile Zola's famous open letter "J'Accuse".
The 63 spaces depict various events and personalities related to the Dreyfus Affair, including Ferdinand Esterhazy, Émile Zola, the editor of L'Aurore and many others. The objective of the game is to get to the truth, which is represented as a young woman rising out of a well, a figure depicted also in several of the game's stations. This image was popular in turn-of-the-century France and is based on an aphorism by Greek philosopher Democritus, "Of truth we know nothing, for truth is in a well".
Approx. 45.5X62.5 cm. Good condition. Tears and stains. Mounted on (linen-backed) thick paper for display and preservation.
