Collection of about 380 letters sent to Rebbe Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar. Most of them sent from Jerusalem, 1950s-1970s. Most in Hebrew, the rest in Yiddish.

The letters were written by rabbis, rebbes, dayanim, followers and associates, and pious laymen in Jerusalem and Eretz Israel, and by associations, organizations, yeshivas and Torah and charitable institutions in Eretz Israel.

Letters signed and stamped by the rabbis and institutions, some of them on official stationery. Most are handwritten and some are typewritten. Many of them contain letters of recommendation from various rabbis in the margins. In the margins of some of the letters are inscriptions and stamps of the Rebbe's secretary, with a summary of the contents of the request.

Most of the letters deal with requests for assistance or financial support, or receipts and confirmations for charitable funds sent from the Satmar Rebbe. Many of the letters include Shanah Tovah and Ketivah VaChatimah Tovah wishes; blessings for Jewish festivals; names to be mentioned in prayer for blessing and sustenance, health and happiness from children; halachic questions and Torah discussions; advocacy and communal affairs; resolution of controversies and disputes; and more.

The collection includes nine letters to Rebbe Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar: • Three letters from R. Rebbetzin Alta Feiga Teitelbaum (1912-2001), second wife of Rebbe Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar and his companion for 42 years. Daughter of Rebbe Avigdor Shapiro of Częstochowa, a descendant of the Maggid of Kozhnitz, author of Maor VaShemesh, and the Divrei Chaim of Sanz. On 13 Elul 1937, she married Rebbe Yoel of Satmar (who had lost his first wife a year and a half earlier). She was rescued in the Holocaust together with her husband the Rebbe in the Kastner train. After the Holocaust, she had a large influence on the Chassidic community and its institutions. She participated in establishing Chassidic institutions, and provided support and raised funds for them. She managed charitable funds, and over her whole life she would visit the sick and marry off brides. She was an intelligent and God-fearing woman, known for her great righteousness and wisdom. After the passing of her husband the Rebbe, the Bnei Yoel Beit Midrash and community was established in her house in Kiryas Joel, Monroe. The Rebbetzin moved to Brooklyn and served as a rebbe in her own right, having public receptions and reading Kvitels. She passed away over 20 years after her husband, and was buried at his side in the Kiryas Joel cemetery. Several Torah and charitable institutions in the United States and Israel are named for her.

Two leaves (4 written pages), novellae on the Torah – Parashat Acharei Mot, Kedoshim-Emor, handwritten by R. Eliezer David Grünwald, Av Beit Din of Satmar, author of Keren LeDavid.
Author's autograph manuscript. R. Eliezer David's novellae on the Torah were published posthumously in Keren LeDavid on Bereshit (Satmar, 1930) and Shemot (Satmar, 1939). The manuscripts of the other parts, which were not yet printed, were hidden in the ground during the Holocaust, and were finally published only in 1976 by the Vayechi Yosef of Pápa in the United States, and in another edition by R. Aharon Shapiro of Narol (Bnei Brak, 2008). The present leaf may have been among the writings hidden underground during the Holocaust.
This manuscript contains the initial text, handwritten by the author, which was subsequently edited (with variations) and was published in the Brooklyn and Bnei Brak editions. On the page on Parashat Emor, between the lines there are some lines in a different hand. At the top of the four pages is inscribed "proofread".
[2] leaves. 27.5 cm. Good to fair-good condition. Tears and wear to margins. On the margins of one of the pages, tears are repaired with paper strips and tape, affecting text, dark stains and pasting traces.

R. Eliezer David Grünwald, Av Beit Din of Satmar (ca. 1866 – 1928), prominent Torah leader and yeshiva dean in Hungary and Transylvania. Close disciple of his brother R. Moshe Grünwald, the Arugat HaBosem. He studied for a short period under R. Shmuel Ehrenfeld, author of Chatan Sofer. He served as rabbi and dayan in many prominent communities – Bardejov, Dunajská Streda, Tzelem (Deutschkreutz) and Vişeu de Sus – establishing in each place a large yeshiva where he edified many disciples, including dozens of rabbis and poskim. His yeshiva in Vişeu de Sus alone had hundreds of students. In 1921, he was chosen as Av Beit Din of Satmar, and he headed one of the largest yeshivas of Hungary, the very largest in Transylvania. After his passing, his disciples began to publish his novellae, from which they printed Responsa Keren LeDavid on Orach Chaim (Satmar, 1929; other parts of the Responsa were lost in the Holocaust), Keren LeDavid on the Torah (Satmar, 1930-1939), Keren LeDavid – Homilies (Satmar, 1934), and more.

Report card of the student David Ze'ev Neuman of Șomcuta Mare, who studied in the class of R. Tzvi Kalman in the Keren LeDavid Satmar yeshiva: "Chevrah Bachurim of the yeshiva of the Rebbe Av Beit Din of Satmar". His schedule – basic lecture, Chumash and Rashi, Orach Chaim, Yoreh Deah, in-depth lecture.
The report card was issued for summer 1928, months Iyar-Av. Each page is divided into two weeks and arranged into nine spaces (to be filled and signed) for Monday-Thursday and the lectures in Chumash-Rashi, basic lecture, Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim and Yoreh Deah. Some of the spaces are stamped by the Gabbaim of the yeshiva: "passed the test" or "passed the test and satisfied our rabbi".
Afterwards appears an empty page to be filled with the test grades: "lecture tests", "passed the test on the subject", "the great test", "passed the test on Tractate – from folio – to folio –".
On the margins of the pages appears the signature or stamp of the Gabbai of the yeshiva, "Baruch Tzvi Katz Moszkowicz" [on the margins of the title page is a list of other Gabbais of the yeshiva: "Efraim Fishel Moszkowicz, Shmuel David Abrahamowicz, Shmuel David Rappoport and Chaim Weinstock].
On the margins of the first page appears the yeshiva's official stamp: "Stamp of the Av Beit Din and yeshiva dean of Satmar" (inside which is an identical inscription in Romanian and an illustration of an open book); on the margins of the following pages are stamps: "Chevrah Bachurim of the high yeshiva of Satmar".

The Gabbai of the yeshiva whose signature is on the present document – R. Baruch Tzvi HaKohen Moszkowicz (1907-1990), born in Makó. Studied seven years in the yeshiva of the Keren LeDavid in Satmar, where he advanced beyond his peers and was chosen as Gabbai of the Chevrah Charifut. He traveled to the Ahavat Yisrael in Vizhnitz, to the Minchat Elazar in Munkacs and to Rebbe Aharon of Belz, but he was closest with his own rebbe, Rebbe Yoel of Satmar. After the Holocaust, in 1947 he was appointed Av Beit Din of the Orthodox community in Páks, where he established an important yeshiva. Ten years later, in 1957 he was appointed Rosh Av Beit Din of Budapest, and in 1959 he moved to Vienna. During that period he authored and published his important books Tenuvot Baruch, Mishmeret Tzvi and more. In 1981 he moved to the United States and established his Beit Midrash in Brooklyn, "Beit David of Páks". He was known as great in Torah, Chassidut and fear of God. He was a loyal childhood friend of both the Vayechi Yosef of Pápa and the Berach Moshe of Satmar.

At the top of the title page is a handwritten dedication from the author's son-in-law, the publisher R. Yosef Grünwald: "Wedding gift to… R. Moshe son of R. Tzvi Lamm of Vișeu de Sus, disciple of the author. May he merit from his own labor all good. The wishes of his friend and well-wisher, Yosef Grünwald". Stamps of the recipient, R. Moshe Lamm-Kahan, on the title page and second leaf.
* Keren LeDavid, aggadic novellae on the Torah – Part I on Bereshit and Part II on Shemot. Satmar, 1930-1939. Two parts in two volumes. At the beginning of the two parts is an introduction by the publisher, Rebbe Yosef Grünwald of Pupa (grandson of the Arugat HaBosem, the author's brother). The pre-subscribers list at the end of Part II mentions "the Rebbe Av Beit Din" [Rebbe Yoel Teitelbaum, who was appointed the same year, 1934, to serve as abbi of Satmar]; and "Avraham Yitzchak Kahn" [later the Rebbe of Toldot Aharon – at the time learning in the yeshiva of Rebbe Yoel of Satmar].

The author, R. Eliezer David Grünwald, Av Beit Din of Satmar (ca. 1866-1928), prominent Torah leader and yeshiva dean in Hungary and Transylvania. Close disciple of his brother R. Moshe Grünwald, the Arugat HaBosem. He studied for a short period under R. Shmuel Ehrenfeld, author of Chatan Sofer. He served as rabbi and dayan in many prominent communities – Bardejov, Dunajská Streda, Tzelem (Deutschkreutz) and Vişeu de Sus – establishing in each place a large yeshiva where he edified many disciples, including dozens of rabbis and poskim. His yeshiva in Vişeu de Sus alone had hundreds of students. In 1921, he was chosen as Av Beit Din of Satmar, and he headed one of the largest yeshivas of Hungary, the very largest in Transylvania. After his passing, his disciples began to publish his novellae, from which they printed Responsa Keren LeDavid on Orach Chaim (Satmar, 1929; other parts of the work were lost in the Holocaust), Keren LeDavid on the Torah (Satmar, 1930-1939), Keren LeDavid – Homilies (Satmar, 1934), and more.

Written on stationery of Yeshivat Kehillat Yaakov [Pupa]. Sent to the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States, requesting a letter of recommendation for R. Yosef Binyamin Friedman, emissary for the Pupa yeshiva, who was sent "to raise funds from our fellow Jews for our yeshiva, in which poor people study who will disseminate Torah with God's help… Yosef Grünwald, Av Beit Din of Pápa".

Rebbe Yosef Grünwald of Pupa (1903-1984), last rabbi of Pápa, Hungary, and leading rabbi in the United States. Son and successor of R. Yaakov Yechizkiyah Grünwald, Av Beit Din of Pápa, the Vayaged Yaakov (son of R. Moshe Grünwald, the Arugat HaBosem). In 1925 he married the daughter of his great-uncle R. Yaakov Yechizkiyah Grünwald (brother of the Arugat HaBosem). He served as posek and yeshiva dean in Satmar, and in 1941 after the passing of his father the Vayaged Yaakov, he moved to Pápa and served as town rabbi. During the Holocaust he lost his first wife and their ten children, who were murdered by the Nazis. After the war he moved to Belgium and later reached the United States, where he established the Kehillat Yaakov Pupa community, and served as rabbi and yeshiva dean. He was a leading Orthodox rabbi in the United States; he served as president of the Central Rabbinical Congress associated with the Satmar Chassidut, and he was known as the "Pupa Rav". His books include Responsa Vayaan Yosef, the Vayechi Yosef series, Darchei Yosef, and more.

At the end of the letter the Rebbe adds in his own handwriting: "And may God send His holy assistance in full health and much happiness and salvation and all good forever – Shlomo Halberstam".

At the end of the letter the Rebbe adds in his handwriting a blessing for the New Year: "And may you be blessed with a Ketivah VaChatimah Tovah", and he signs – "Shlomo Halberstam".

Printed letter, invitation to the general assembly to found the Central Rabbinical Conference of the United States and Canada, with (printed) signatures of the head rabbis of the "interim directorship committee" and "interim executive committee", headed by the Rebbe Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar. Brooklyn, New York, Adar 1955.
Historical document from the first public organization of the "extreme" Hungarian Orthodox rabbis in the United States. The decision to found the Conference was already made in the first gathering in Tevet – "a rabbinical union to guard our holy Torah transmitted to us from our fathers and holy rabbis" – and in the interim a directorship committee of five rabbis and an executive committee of six rabbis were chosen to organize the general gathering that was to choose a permanent leadership for the Central Rabbinical Conference.
The general gathering was scheduled for 4 Iyar, 1955, in the Grand Paradise Hall in Brooklyn. The scheduled events included: appointing members of the leadership, members of the "executive committee", members of various committees, and discussion of various suggestions for the agenda.
The letter is signed by the heads of the "interim directorship committee": Rebbe Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar, R. Yonatan Steif of Budapest, R. Yehoshua Chaim Teitelbaum of Ciężkowice, R. Yitzchak Alter Wagschal of Łańcut, R. Levi Yitzchak Grünwald of Tzelem (Deutschkreutz); as well as the heads of the "interim executive committee": R. Hillel Lichtenstein of Kraszna, R. Yehoshua Grünwald of Khust, R. Yechezkel Shraga Rubin Halberstam of Cieszanów, R. Yissachar Ber Rottenberg of Wodzisław, R. Moshe Teitelbaum of Sighet [author of Berach Moshe, later Rebbe of Satmar], R. Moshe HaLevi Horowitz of Boston. Director: R. Yaakov Segal Leibowitz of Kopisch (Kaposvár).
