Binah Gvirtz – Collection of Original Illustrations for Children's Stories
44 original illustrations (ink on paper) by Binah Gvirtz, hand-signed by her [Palestine, ca. 1930s to the mid-20th century].
The collection contains illustrations for the stories: "Three Boats", "the Snake", "Daffodils", "The Story of the Cyclamen", "Morning", "The Students' Strike", "Second Leil Seder", "Everybody's Grandmother", "Three Oil Jugs", "Samson's Foxes", "My Grandfather's Sukkah" and other stories.
The illustrations are hand-signed by Gvirtz, and on most of them appear the title of the story as well as instructions for printing and a serial number (in the margins). In addition, on verso of several of the illustrations, there are lines from the stories, to be printed alongside the illustration.
The children's book illustrator Binah Gvirtz-Shteklis (1913-2008) was born in Poland, grew up in Germany and immigrated to Palestine in 1935. She illustrated more than 300 children's books, including "Atzu Ratzu Gamadim" by Miriam Yalan-Shteklis and "Al HaArnevet" by Chaim Nachman Bialik.
