Chuppah – Bodenbach Congregation, 1898

Embroidered Chuppah (wedding canopy). Bodenbach, Germany, 1898. Red and brown velvet; sky-blue satin; embroidery in golden threads. Golden stars are embroidered on bluish satin on the inner side of the chuppah (above the couple’s heads during the wedding ceremony). In the center, within a frame embroidered in vegetal pattern, appears an embroidered inscription: “Kodesh LeHashem…1898…”. The chuppah has four indented wings, embroidered in German, with golden threads (the inscription is turned outwards): “Gespendetvom isr. Frauen verein / Bodenbach / Zum Regierungsjubiläum 1898 / Gesegnet die da kommen im Namen des Herrn!” [donated by the union of women in Bodenbach… 1898… welcome in the name of G-d!]. The word “Bodenbach” is encircled with embroidered stars. Four openings in the corners for the chuppah poles. 115X128 cm. Good-fair condition. Embroidery in good condition. Holes and damages to satin. Tears. Wear around the openings for poles.
