Trowel – Souvenir from the Cornerstone Laying Ceremony for a Synagogue – Dublin, Ireland, 1892
Ornate trowel. Dublin, Ireland, 1892. Silver (marked); ivory handle. Ornate trowel inscribed in English and adorned with a vegetal pattern. Presented to John D. Rosenthal on behalf of the Dublin Hebrew Congregation in commemoration of the cornerstone ceremony for a new synagogue (Adelaide Road) on November 13, 1892 [5653]. Later, due to absence of worshipers, the synagogue building was sold. Rosenthal was an attorney and vice president of the Jewish congregation. Immigration of Jews to Ireland started in the early 1880s. In 2006 about 1930 Jews lived in Ireland. Length: 35 cm. Good condition.
