Torah Shield – Warsaw / Cherkasy (Ukraine), 1897

Torah shield, produced in Warsaw in the late 19th century; dedicatory inscription from "Cherkos" (probably Cherkasy, Ukraine), 1897.
Silver, repoussé and embossed (marked: "Nowosielski W War").
Torah shield in typical Polish design: topped by a pair of lions holding an embossed crown decoration. In the center is an ark with two doors on hinges, with a cast decoration in the form of a Torah scroll within; below is a rectangular compartment for replacement plaques (without plaques), with a pair of large pillars on both sides. The margins are decorated with rich vegetal decorations, with three large bells below. Suspension chain.
On the back of the Torah plate is an engraved dedicatory inscription: "Beila daughter of Refael Salitan, Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Elul 1897 / Cherkos".

Height: 27 cm. Width: 23 cm. Overall good condition. Minor warping. Two bells lacking.
