Manuscript booklet containing an official notarial copy (Traslado) of a royal decree (Real Cédula) issued by the Catholic Monarchs (los Reyes Católicos), King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile. [Spain, Madrid?, 1487?]. Old Spanish (Gothic cursive script).
Royal decree issued shortly before the completion of the Christian Reconquista and less than five years prior to the Expulsion of the Jews from Spain (1492), revoking the charters of rights granted to Jews, "Moors" (Muslims), and other non-Christians residing in Spain.
The decree prohibits Christians from entering into contracts, obligations, or deeds with Jews and other non-Christians by which Christians might become subject or indebted to them; annuls all privileges and letters of protection granted by previous Spanish monarchs; and threatens severe penalties and fines upon those who violate its provisions.
The document was written and authenticated by an official public notary. His abbreviated signature appears in the margin of each page; his full and elaborate signature appears on the final page, accompanied by a distinctive personal notarial sign (signo notarial).
A later inscription (apparently 18th century) on the final page summarizes the principal contents of the decree.
16 leaves (32 manuscript pages). Approx. 22 cm. Overall good condition. Stains, creases, and wear. Minor tears at margins (open tears to inner margins of first and last leaves). Leaves detached.
