Havdalah Spicebox. Harburg, Hamburg, Germany, ca. 1815-1843.
Silver, cut, repoussé, and engraved (marked with the Hamburg municipal mark, with the letter "L", and with the maker’s mark: "Leschen. Harburg" = Georg Friedrich Wilhelm and Carl Friedrich Leschen); filigree; gilt.
Tower-shaped Havdalah spicebox, with bell chamber surmounted by a tall, pointy steeple, in turn surmounted by a gilt sphere and gilt flag. The spice container itself is large and cubic, and filigreed on all four sides. On its front is a small door, attached by a hinge and with a locking mechanism. Supported by a short, stout shaft atop a circular base.
Height: 28.5 cm. Diameter of base: 7 cm. Overall good condition. Few fractures and minor warping. Old soldering repairs, mostly to spice container. Several missing pieces to filigree.
