Spicebox. [Eastern Europe, probably Galicia, 19th century].
Silver (unmarked); filigree; gilt.
Octagonal tower-shaped spicebox. Each of the eight sides of the spice container is topped with a tapering arch. Container capped with an onion-shaped dome. Surmounted by a sphere, flagpole, and filigree flag. Spicebox supported by a stout leg. Hexagonal filigreed base. Two plates of gilt silver sheet underlying filigree of upper dome and of shaft.
All parts of the vessel are attached to a central vertical rod functioning as a screw, enabling the spicebox to be disassembled and reassembled, with no removable door or cover.
Height: 19 cm. Width of base: 5.5 cm. Good condition. Slight warping, minor blemishes to filigree, with few tiny missing pieces.
