Torah Shield – Nijkerk, The Netherlands, 1917 – Hamburger Family

Torah Shield. The Netherlands, dedicatory inscription from Nijkerk, dated 5677 [1917].
Silver, repoussé, stamped, and engraved (marked with Dutch quality mark).
At the top of the shield is a large crown in relief. At its center are the Two Tablets of the Law (engraved with the abbreviated Ten Commandments in Hebrew, and above them, the Hebrew inscription "After inscribing on the tablets / the same text as on the first" [Deuteronomy 10:4]). Framing the bottom half of the Two Tablets is an ornament in the form of a cloth ribbon, engraved with a dedicatory inscription (Hebrew): "Gift to the holy community of Nijkerkhen, from R. Shemuel ben Rabbi / Ya’akov Hamburger, on the day he turned seventy years old, and from his wife, M. Gella bat R. Ya’akov … Menachem …".

Height: 28 cm. Width: 18.5 cm. Good condition. Old soldering repairs at points of attachment of various parts.
