Collection of Letters of Rabbis – Hungary, 1938-1951 – Community Affairs, Rescue and Holocaust Agunot

Large collection of over 50 assorted letters and documents, by rabbis and community leaders in Hungary, addressed to the community and rabbinic institutions in Budapest. Most letters written during and soon after World War II.
The letters discuss various community affairs, and rescue from the Hungarian forced labor divisions. The letters from after the war discuss the rebuilding of communities after the Holocaust, synagogues and mikvaot, kosher and shechitah issues, Batei Din and permitting Holocaust agunot to remarry.
Many letters are addressed to the Orthodox Bureau in Budapest (Orth. Izr. Központi Iroda), with responses from the rabbis and leaders of the Bureau. Other letters were sent to various institutions and rabbis in Budapest, and to rabbis of the central Beit Din for Holocaust agunot.
See Hebrew description for a detailed description of some of the letters.
