Miniature Esther Scroll – Olive Wood Handle – Jerusalem, 20th Century

Esther scroll. [Jerusalem, first half of 20th century].
Ink and paint on parchment; rolled on carved olive wood roller. Miniature format.
Written in Sephardic Stam script, with serifs (Tagim), on 8 parchment membranes, 35 text columns, 11 lines per column.
The first membrane is decoratively cut at the edges, with a parchment lace for fastening. Before the first text column is a colorful illustration of Haman leading Mordechai riding the horse. The columns are separated by colorful decorations in a repeating vegetal pattern (apparently drawn by stamp). The illustration and decorations may have been made at a later time than the writing of the scroll.

Height of parchment: 8.5 cm. Maximum height (including roller): 23 cm. Good condition. Stains, creases and fading of ink.
