Six Seals – Rabbis and Communities in Hungary and Romania, 19th-20th Centuries

Six seals of rabbis, communities, institutions and organizations in Hungary and Romania:

1. Seal of R. Yisrael Menachem Gottlieb of Fehérgyarmat (possibly the son of the renowned R. Chaim Yosef Gottlieb, rabbi of Stropkov and Tarcal, author of Tiv Gittin VeKidushin; R. Yisrael Menachem died in 1898, and is known to have resided for some time in the vicinity of Fehérgyarmat). Brass cast and engraved. Round seal; inscriptions in Hebrew and Hungarian: "Yisrael Menachem Gottlieb", "Gottlieb Imre Fehérgyarmat".

Diameter: 3.5 cm. With a knob on reverse for attaching handle.

2. Seal of the Jewish Community Council of Târgu Neamț. Brass, cast and engraved. Oval seal; in center, the emblem of the United Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia, and Romanian inscription: "Principatele Unite. Epîtropiea Komunităţii Evreeşti în Tîrg. Neamţu 1861".

4X3.5 cm. Knob on reverse for attaching handle (bent and damaged).

3. Seal of the Shas and Tehillim Society of Botoșani. Brass, cast and engraved, with wooden handle. Round seal; in center, a Star of David with branches and a crown above, and inscriptions: "Batashan", and around the perimeter: "Chevrat Shas VeChavurat Tehillim MiBeit HaMidrash HaGadol HaNikra Sivener Beit Midrash". In the center of the Star of David: "Year 5600 [1840]".

Diameter: 4.5 cm. Height (incl. handle): 13 cm.

4. Yom Kippur Schedule Seal from a Hungarian Community. Carved rubber, mounted on wooden base and handle. Large rectangular bilingual seal (Yiddish and Hungarian); includes blank spaces for filling in the Gregorian date of Yom Kippur, times for candle lighting, beginning and end of fast, Yizkor, and the blessing "Gmar Chatima Tova" at bottom.

Approx. 5X9 cm; height (incl. handle): 5.5 cm.

5. Kashrut Seal from Szerencs. Brass, cast and engraved, with wooden handle. Round seal; in center: "Kosher", with inscription around: "Aḥim Engel – Szerencs" (Hebrew).

Diameter: 3 cm. Height (incl. handle): 11 cm.

6. Kashrut Seal. Brass, cast and engraved, with wooden handle. Oval seal; in center: "Kosher" (Hebrew), and around, in Hungarian: "Rítus Szerint Vizsgálva" [Examined According to the Rites].

2.5X3 cm. Height (incl. handle): 10 cm.
