Wimpel Decorated with Colorful Embroidery – Germany, 1729

Wimpel (Torah binder), commemorating the birth of the child Shmuel son of Elazar. [Germany], Nisan 5489 [1729].
Multicolored silk and cotton thread embroidery on linen.
Composed of four equal-sized linen sheets sewn one to the other. At center appears the embroidered inscription: “Shmuel son of Elazar, of blessed memory, was born… on Thursday, 8 Nisan 5489, May G-d raise him to [a life of] Torah, marriage, and good deeds. Amen, Selah.”
The inscription is worked in hollow letters outlined in colorful silk threads, surrounded by embroidered decorations of animals, plants and flowers, a double-headed eagle, a Torah-scroll motif, and a couple standing under a wedding canopy.

Height: 23 cm. Length: 274 cm. Fair-good condition. Minor tears to beginning of first sheet. Stains, some dark, primarily to first sheet. Backed with a later linen sheet for support.
